The Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) is seeking a Senior Technical Advisor – Fire Protection to provide specialist technical and regulatory support to the Office of the State Building Surveyor.

About the Role:

This specialist technical position strengthens the Office of the State Building Surveyor’s support to the Inspectorate on complex, high‑risk and specialist fire protection plumbing matters.

As the Senior Technical Advisor – Fire Protection, you will provide authoritative technical advice and field‑based support relating to wet fire protection systems, including sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, hose reels, fire pump sets and associated installations. You will work closely with inspectors to assist with technical assessments, attend site inspections where required, undertake technical reviews of installations, and contribute to clear, well‑reasoned and defensible reports and recommendations.

The role also supports organisational capability uplift by contributing to the development of consistent internal technical guidance and strengthening technical confidence and consistency across the inspector workforce.

What we are looking for:

You will have:

  • Specialist technical expertise in wet fire protection systems, with substantial practical experience across design, installation, commissioning, inspection, auditing, servicing and compliance.
  • Proven practical capability to undertake complex field‑based technical assessments, including analysing non‑compliant installations and providing sound, practical and defensible technical advice.
  • In‑depth knowledge and practical application of the Building Act 1993 (Vic), Plumbing Regulations, National Construction Code (NCC) and relevant Australian Standards relating to fire protection plumbing.
  • Strong analytical, conceptual and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to assess risk and prepare clear, accurate and concise technical reports, recommendations, briefings and written advice.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills, supported by sound computing capability and experience or understanding of regulatory, compliance, inspection, audit or enforcement environments.

Established in 2025, the BPC is Victoria’s new independent regulator for the building and plumbing industries. The BPC brings together the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria (DBDRV), and the domestic building insurance function of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) into one organisation.

Key functions related to building and plumbing regulation have come together under one roof, including registration, inspection and compliance, practitioner discipline, dispute resolution, and domestic building insurance.
