Networking as an introvert

Planned Resources recruit across the niche markets of planning, engineering, architecture and design, property, and government support. We operate across private and public sectors in Melbourne, Victoria, and Australia. Here, our Senior Consultant Rebecca Slaviero gives her tips on how to network when an introvert.

As a recruiter, it’s assumed that we are all extroverted and loud, without a shy bone in our bodies…

Do I wish that were the case! I am what you would call an introverted extrovert meaning that when it comes to networking events I can sometimes send myself off into a bit of a tailspin because I may not be able to control the situation or the conversation at all times. Not in a controlling way; it’s more of a nervous reaction if I don’t know a specific answer to a question. So I understand how you feel when you’re nervous about attending an event!

Networking and how to network is a topic that comes up with a lot with junior candidates who may be just about to start in their career and wanting to know how to get the conversation started at these events.

Introverted? Virtual networking is an absolute dream for you and given the current situation most events are via zoom:
  • You can have a conversation with other likeminded people or simply listen to a speaker from the comfort of your home (and your slippers).
  • If you don’t want to ask the questions in front of everyone, use the private chat function to start a conversation with the speaker
  • Make those connections on LinkedIn afterwards and send a note

This gives you a starting point in conversing with the other person

In typical networking events, we would suggest:
  • Bringing your extroverted friend/ colleague along; there is safety in numbers and you can have a conversation as a group rather than one on one
  • Keep the conversation light, use something simple like a comment on the weather as an ice breaker
  • Ask about THEM – how did they begin their career? What are their thoughts on said topic? What you will come to notice is that MOST people like to talk about themselves!

These are just a few tips and tricks that can get you through your networking event and remember: breath and always be yourself.

Happy networking!
