Perceptions of working in local government: Busting the myths

Planned Resources recruit across the niche markets of planning, engineering, architecture and design, property, and government support. We operate across private and public sectors in Melbourne, Victoria, and Australia.

There’s so much to gain from working in the local government sector – so why and how have stereotypes about working in local government evolved?

In this video Leo Liemesak, Planned Resources, and Mark Puncher, Employer Branding Australia, discuss:

  • The stereotypes of working within local government – and how these perceptions compare to reality
  • How local government can communicate their positive stories
  • How councils can build an identity of a vibrant, inclusive workplace
  • The local government recruitment process, and how it can be used to help build a recruitment brand

Mark says local government can offer a vibrant and progressive workplace: “Ask the next five people you speak to within your council three questions: 1. What attracted you to join us in the first place? 2. What keeps you coming back even when it’s hard? 3. And if you left, what wouldn’t you miss? And learn from what they’re saying, make it safe for them to tell the truth, and really start listening.”
