The Special Activation Precinct will see the creation of up to 6,000 jobs and the northern growth area will see 15,000 new residents come to our city when completed. The recently opened Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics hub is operating daily services to national and international markets. The essential services provided by Council including the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre, Livestock Marketing Exchange, Wagga Wagga Airport and Gregadoo Waste Management Facility must plan for and service the expanding needs of our city.
About the Role
In this role, you will be responsible for working as part of small Strategic Planning Team, applying strategic planning expertise to deliver high quality integrated strategic land use and policy planning advice and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, prepare, review and update strategic and statutory plans and policies including local environmental plans, development control plans and planning studies.
- Provide and implement innovative strategic planning solutions.
- Evaluate and process requests for complex amendments to strategic planning documents.
- Prepare reports to Council and other committees.
- Provide high level technical expertise and advice to Coordinator Strategic Planning, customers and industry professionals on complex planning issues.
- Liaise on a regular basis with commercial, industry and government stakeholders in relation to strategic planning matters.
- Conduct meetings, forums and workshops including the preparation and delivery of presentations on strategic planning matters/issues.
- Keep abreast of and provide advice on current planning legislation, particularly as it relates to Council’s strategic planning initiatives and programs.
- Oversee the establishment and maintenance of strategic planning operational files and current research information.
- Coordinate the preparation and display of statutory planning exhibitions.
- Provide input to the review and development of Council’s strategic planning procedures.
- Monitor land use in a timely manner and periodically assess strategic growth issues, opportunities and needs and provide advice and interpretation on land use and development issues.
Skills and Experience
- Tertiary qualifications relevant to the role e.g. Town Planning or similar.
- Minimum four (4) years’ experience in a Strategic Planning role with an emphasis on the preparation of strategic plans, policies and studies, application of urban design principles and heritage management, and generation and implementation of innovative strategic planning solutions.
- Knowledge of statutory requirements of various acts and regulations and solid understanding and experience in risk assessment of projects, activities and tasks.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently and, in particular, the ability to nurture and facilitate the development of planning skills within the team.
- Ability to deliver quality customer service, contribute to service improvement and adapt to change.
- Highly developed time management, planning, administrative skills and computer skills.
- Solid communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills including sound conflict resolution, negotiation skills, advocacy, facilitation and report writing skills.
